UP, Michigan

But before we get to Duluth, we travel along US2 on the shores of Lake Michigan in the UP (upper peninsula to you easterners that don't know Michigan very well)
Along the bottom of this map a little further on, you can see Washington Island which is off the tip of Door County. This is where Thorsten Veblen, who apparently invented the Leisure Class, spent some of his summers. You can get there only by ferry.
Oh, wait—there is a small airstrip there.
But I digress.
Now I don't want any of you in the back giggling about these place names that we are going to encounter along the way. Such as West Ishpeming, MI, which is not directly on this route, but is on US 41 (another adventure would be to go to the end of US 41, don't you think?)
So now we are ready to head out from Duluth to the west. If you followed us up to Grand Marais, you realized that we are now on our second of the Great Lakes.
Halfway across Minnesota, we go through Grand Rapids, MN, Itasca County.
Perhaps we spend the night there.
