Former Customer

I got a call today from the salesman that sold us our stero some time ago. He said that they were having a private sale for former customers.
I said "Wait&emdash;how did I become a former customer&emdash;have I been fired?"
That reminds me of some public official, perhaps a school superintendent, who listed on his vita that he was a "former alumnus" of a particular school.
Now I am wondering exactly how one becomes a former alumnus. Is it like the plagerism kind of thing where they retract something from you? Curious. Or a former child of Phil and Winnie.
Or is it perhaps that the fellow had less than a stellar command of the language and was put in charge of future former alumni. Or plagerists.
