Here is a bit of a surprising result. The hybrid car Prius doesn't work out all that well in terms of total energy consumption. That is, in terms of the energy used and environmental cost to produce the car, it does not fare that well as compared to a Hummer:

Prius Outdoes Hummer in Environmental Damage

The Toyota Prius has become the flagship car for those in our society so environmentally conscious that they are willing to spend a premium to show the world how much they care. Unfortunately for them, their ultimate 'green car' is the source of some of the worst pollution in North America; it takes more combined energy per Prius to produce than a Hummer.

This is the day most years that I head out for the Dayton Hamvention in Dayton Ohio. Hams from around the world come there for connecting with old friends, seeing new equipment, checking out a remarkable flea market. This year I will be unable to go due to business-related issues.

It is always a fun trip, usually with the ham radio in the car. On the air you can hear the chatter of the hams on the way to the convention. In years past, traveling has been a group event, complete with picnic lunch on the way, turns with the radio, and general comraderie.

The actual festivities don't start until Friday, but to be able to get their early on Friday, the custom was to arrive sometime Thursday evening. The plan was always to leave relatively early on Thursday, but it usually ended up being about noon. It seems that there was always something to finish about the radio installation, or packing or picking someone up who had to work in the morning.

As people moved away, the number going along reduced, until over the last several years it was a solo trip. One year, however, Rajiv, who had moved to New York, drove to Chicago with his family, then he and I drove to Dayton the next day. Lots of driving that year.
