South Pacific

In November 2000, I was lucky enough to go to Vanuatu with five other guys to do a little ham radio. It is a fun thing to go to a distant land and have everybody in the world want to talk to you. You can see our parting picture. We did our operating from a house rented by a New Zeland ham who was working on the island. His house was quite nice, and in fact is featured in the novel "South Pacific".

In that same year, a bunch of hams went to Kingman Reef. Their conditions were much more harsh. They were on a coral reef, about three feet above sea level. They had to bring their own floor.

This April, some guys went to Scarborough Reef. Never mind bringing your own floor, they had to build platforms on outcroppings of rocks..

Now that is how to do a hobby.
